He was mainly a journalist, and conducted various magazines, including the American Monthly; but he also wrote short poems, many of which were popular, of which perhaps the best is "Unseen Spirits Occupation: editor, literary critic, poet. He edited the first American edition of Milton's prose works (), and, as literary executor, edited, with James R. Lowell and N. P. Willis, the works () of Edgar Allan Poe.
